Finland is geographically divided into 19 regions with 357 prominent cities across the country, but in terms of exploring the country to find out the uniqueness each area has that can be covered when planning a trip, we divided it into four main regions, Helsinki region, Coast and the archipelago, Lakeland and Lapland.
HELSINKI REGION
The Helsinki region includes the capital city and its metropolitan area, as well as some further-flung towns and cities, here you can experience lively urban life, with good food, great design, interesting museums, and unique architecture.
Helsinki is a perfect combination of urbanity and peaceful nature just around the corner. This region invites you to know about history, and see how architecture and design has been changing through the years, not leaving behind the opportunity to get in touch with nature; see the islands in the Gulf of Finland, visit Suomenlinna fortress, have a walk in the parks that we have in the city with beautiful views of Helsinki or get into the woods in Nuuksio National Park where you can enjoy multiple outdoors activities, and if you are a lover of old towns, we have Porvoo only 50 km from the city, known for the charming wooden houses, and for been one of the oldest cities in Finland.
COAST AND THE ARCHIPELAGO
With more than 50,000 beautiful islands scattered across the sea, this is the world’s largest archipelago, and there are plenty of hidden gems to be discovered.
Why should I visit this region?
We have plenty of things for you to fall in love with Finland's coastal region, from the laidback way of living, charming wooden towns, fresh local food, beaches, and much more.
Explore a lighthouse island, one of the most unique features of this region are the lighthouse islands.
Visit Bengtskär, where you'll find the tallest lighthouse in the Nordics. Take a trip to Kalajoki, Yyteri or Hanko, to experience the best Finland's best beaches, especially if you coming in summertime. If you want to experience the island’s lifestyle, try the Turku archipelago ring road, where you can reach each island by ferry, see historic landmarks, and enjoying stunning nature trails.
LAKELAND
If you want to get in touch with Finnish culture, Lakeland is the region that has everything for it. There's no scene more Finnish than a cottage by the lake surrounded by the deep green forest. Saunas, Finnish cuisine, and cottages by the thousands of freshwater lakes will make you feel the essence of Finland.
Finland is known as the land of a thousand lakes and most of them are located in Lakeland. These clean, freshwater lakes provide an excellent opportunity for year-round activities, from kayaking and swimming in the summer to ice skating and cross-country skiing in the winter. Tampere, Kuopio, Joensuu, and Savonlinna are some of the cities that have everything for you to enjoy in Lakeland, and besides activities in the water, we have incredible national parks to have a hike to explore Finnish forest.
LAPLAND
Is winter wonderland what you have in your mind? If so, Lapland is your region.
Lapland is the largest and northernmost of the regions of Finland. The land of the indigenous Sámi people, and known for being an active outdoor destination where you can do multiple activities like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, and much more. Needless to say, Santa Claus, reindeer, the northern lights, and great expanses of untouched wilderness characterize this unique region.
Lapland is an extensive territory where its capital is Rovaniemi, here the Arctic Circle begins, and the official Santa’s office is located. Further north, Kittilä and Ivalo are the best destinations to hunt northern lights if that is what you aim for, besides being surrounded by a deep and amazing snowy forest.
